The move into Year 3 is more than a change of classroom. It marks an important stage in a child’s development, when growing independence, curiosity and self-awareness begin to shape how they understand themselves and the world around them.
By this age, children are increasingly ready to take on new challenges. They become more aware of their place within a wider community and more willing to explore new experiences, whether through academic subjects, sport, creative activities or friendships. This is why the years between 7 and 11 are so important. The breadth of opportunities children encounter during this period helps lay the foundations for confidence, resilience and lifelong learning.
At Sibford Junior School, we believe that breadth creates depth. The more experiences children have, the more connections they make between different areas of learning and the more they discover about their own strengths and interests.
Children joining Key Stage 2 benefit from a curriculum that extends beyond the traditional primary framework. Alongside core subjects, they have opportunities to learn French and Spanish, explore pottery, take part in Forest School and Food Technology, and develop digital skills through Computer Science. Learning is brought to life through practical experiences, whether in our raised beds, Living History area or outdoor learning spaces, where problem-solving and real-world application are part of everyday school life.
This breadth extends well beyond the classroom. Our sports hall, climbing wall, gym and swimming pool provide children with opportunities to challenge themselves physically, while more than four hours each week are dedicated to PE, games, fixtures and swimming.
A rich co-curricular programme further broadens horizons. Children can join choirs and bands, play competitive sports, explore coding and animation, develop creative talents through art and STEM activities, or enjoy quieter pursuits such as chess, reading and yoga. Our bespoke Discovery Award encourages pupils to engage with environmental issues, charitable work, adventure and social change.
These experiences do more than fill a timetable. They help children develop confidence, adaptability and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
As children progress through Key Stage 2, they also become increasingly aware of the people around them. Friendships deepen, empathy grows and children begin to understand how their actions can positively influence others. They develop a stronger sense of fairness and responsibility, becoming more conscious of both their local community and the wider world.
At Sibford, this development is nurtured through our concept of Stewardship, inspired by our Quaker heritage. Children are encouraged to recognise that they can make a positive difference, whether by addressing environmental issues, supporting charitable causes or contributing to their school community. Learning is connected to real-world challenges, helping pupils see how the knowledge and skills they acquire can be used with purpose.
Alongside academic progress, equal importance is placed on teamwork, communication, resilience and problem-solving. These qualities are developed through daily experiences, relationships and opportunities to contribute.
The result is a Key Stage 2 education that nurtures the curiosity first sparked in Early Years and Key Stage 1 and helps it grow into confidence, capability and character. This creates a natural pathway of transition, where pupils are gradually prepared for the opportunities of Senior School, academically stretched but with positive engagement and application of their learning at the heart. They leave as thoughtful learners, supportive friends and active contributors to their communities.

As well as enjoying lessons with their year group, children in Years 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to join in with a PE session, while those in Years 5 and 6 will enjoy a swimming session as part of the day.”
