Why Joining Sibford Before Year 7 Can Make All the Difference

Ed Rossiter, Head of Junior School, explores why the transition to Senior School begins long before Year 7, and how the right foundations can help children thrive.

For many parents, the move to secondary school is a significant milestone in their child’s education. But what if the key to a successful transition isn’t simply choosing the right school for Year 7, but thinking about the years leading up to it?

The transition from primary to secondary school brings greater independence, new friendships, academic challenges and increased personal responsibility. While this can be an exciting time, it can also present challenges for young people as they adjust to unfamiliar environments, and expectations.

Across England, educators have long been aware of the “Year 7 dip” – a phenomenon in which pupils’ academic progress, confidence and engagement can decline following the move to secondary school. Research into school transition has highlighted how pupils’ enjoyment of school, confidence and engagement can be affected as they adjust to the demands of secondary education.

Pupils move from being known closely by a small number of teachers to working with a larger group of subject specialists. They encounter new routines, a more complex environment and the challenge of building new social relationships, all while facing increasingly demanding academic expectations. For many children, it is the combination of these changes, rather than any lack of ability, that can affect confidence and progress.

Beyond SATs and Entrance Tests

The final years of primary education are often dominated by conversations about SATs and entrance examinations. While assessments can provide a useful snapshot of attainment at a particular moment in time, they offer only a partial picture of a child’s potential and do not define the course of their future learning journey.

At Sibford, we believe that genuine educational success is built upon curiosity, engagement and a lasting love of learning. Children learn best when they are motivated by discovery, challenge and understanding rather than by the pursuit of test scores alone.

Assessment therefore serves a different purpose. We use it to understand where each child is in their learning journey and, crucially, what their next steps should be. This enables teaching to be responsive to individual needs, helping children maintain confidence while providing clear guidance on how they can continue to grow and succeed.

Why Key Stage 2 Matters

At Sibford, successful transition does not begin in Year 6. It begins much earlier.

One of the greatest strengths of our all-through educational experience is that Key Stage 2 is deliberately designed to prepare children for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Throughout these formative years, pupils are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners. They learn how to organise themselves, manage their responsibilities, think critically, collaborate with others and approach new challenges with confidence.

At the same time, they benefit from the nurturing environment and strong relationships that are central to life in the Junior School. This combination of support and challenge helps children build the resilience, self-belief and positive learning habits that will serve them well throughout their education.

For many families, joining Sibford during Key Stage 2 provides a valuable opportunity to become part of this journey. Rather than viewing transition as a single event at the end of Year 6, we see it as a gradual process that unfolds over a number of years, allowing children to develop strong academic, social and emotional foundations before they enter Senior School.

A Different Approach to Transition

Because the majority of Junior School pupils progress into Senior School, transition at Sibford feels less like a leap into the unknown and more like a natural next step.

As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they become increasingly familiar with the wider school community. They develop confidence in the expectations that lie ahead, build relationships with staff and begin to see themselves as part of the broader Sibford journey.

By the time children reach Year 7, this familiarity can help reduce many of the challenges associated with moving to Senior School. Teachers know them well, not only as learners but as individuals with their own interests, strengths and aspirations. Appropriate academic support can therefore be planned from the outset, while pastoral care remains consistent and personalised.

Children begin Year 7 feeling known, valued and understood.

Equally important is the confidence they have developed during their years in the Junior School. By Year 6, pupils have taken on positions of responsibility, contributed to the life of the school community, worked collaboratively across different age groups and embraced a wide range of opportunities in sport, the arts, outdoor education and leadership. As a result, they enter Senior School ready not simply to cope with greater independence, but to embrace it.

Relationships at the Heart of Success

Strong relationships are central to every successful transition.

At Sibford, pastoral care does not reset when pupils move from Year 6 to Year 7. Instead, support continues seamlessly, helping children feel secure as they encounter new opportunities and responsibilities.

Parents also benefit from this continuity. Conversations that begin during a child’s early years in the Junior School continue throughout their educational journey, enabling staff and families to work together in supporting each child’s wellbeing, development and success.

Most importantly, transition is not viewed as an event that takes place in September. It is an ongoing process. Staff remain closely connected to pupils as they settle into Year 7, helping them navigate both academic and social challenges while encouraging increasing independence and self-confidence.

Building on Strong Foundations

The purpose of transition should be far more ambitious than simply moving children from one phase of education to another. It should be about maintaining confidence, sustaining a love of learning and ensuring that every child continues to flourish.

At Sibford, our approach begins long before Year 7. Through a rich and purposeful Key Stage 2 experience, strong relationships, continuity of care, personalised academic support and a curriculum that prioritises curiosity and engagement, we help children develop the skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education.

Our aim is for pupils to build upon the firm foundations established in the Junior School, embracing the opportunities of Senior School with confidence, curiosity and a genuine excitement for learning. For many families, that journey begins in Key Stage 2, where children are given the time, support and opportunities to grow into capable, resilient and successful young people.
